Two of the motorway’s four lanes, lanes three and four, were closed while responders worked to clear the wreckage and manage the situation. For a short time, traffic was halted entirely, causing long queues stretching back to junction 7.
A Cheshire Police spokesperson confirmed:
“At around 6.45 am on Tuesday, 21 October, police were called to reports of a collision on the M62 eastbound between junctions 8 and 9.
Highway officers, ambulance, and fire attended and found there had been a collision involving five cars in lane 4. There are no reports of any injuries, and recovery work is underway at the scene.”
The National Highways issued an update on X, formerly Twitter, saying:
“Delays have now exceeded 60 minutes. Lanes 3 and 4 (of 4) are closed on the M62 eastbound between J8 (Burtonwood) and J9 (Warrington) due to a multi-vehicle collision. Emergency services are working on the scene. Please allow plenty of journey time.”
Traffic monitoring system Inrix reported that vehicles were being held temporarily to allow emergency services to respond safely. The congestion soon spilled over into surrounding roads, including the A57 and Cromwell Avenue, causing additional travel delays around Warrington.
Drivers were advised to avoid the area, seek alternative routes, or delay travel plans until the scene was fully cleared. By mid-morning, recovery operations were ongoing, but officials expected normal traffic flow to resume gradually once the vehicles were removed.
