Washington, D.C. – In a high-stakes diplomatic moment, U.S. President Donald Trump is set to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday. The meeting, centered on a Trump Netanyahu Gaza peace plan, comes at a time when Israel faces growing international isolation and calls for Palestinian statehood gain momentum among America’s closest allies.

This will mark Netanyahu’s fourth visit to Washington since Trump returned to office in January 2025, underscoring the depth of the U.S.-Israel relationship despite widening fractures with the broader international community.

A War Entering Its Third Year

Nearly two years into Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, the humanitarian crisis has escalated sharply. Civilian casualties have mounted, infrastructure lies in ruins, and the region remains locked in one of the bloodiest cycles of conflict in recent history.

Trump has positioned himself as the architect of a potential peace deal, hoping to secure Netanyahu’s agreement on a framework that could pave the way toward ending the war and releasing the hostages still held by Hamas.

In a phone interview with Reuters on Sunday, Trump said, “We’re getting an excellent response because Bibi wants to make the deal too. Everybody wants to make the deal.”

A Shift in Global Diplomacy

The talks come just days after Netanyahu endured a chilly reception at the UN General Assembly (UNGA). His speech was interrupted by mass walkouts as he attacked recent decisions by several Western powers — including Britain, France, Canada, and Australia — to recognize Palestinian statehood officially. Netanyahu described these moves as a “disgraceful decision,” while Trump labeled them as “a reward to Hamas for terrible atrocities.”

Despite opposition from Washington and Tel Aviv, momentum for Palestinian recognition continues to grow. Diplomats note that Trump’s strategy now appears aimed at controlling the narrative by shaping a U.S.-backed Trump Netanyahu Gaza peace plan that includes Arab and Muslim partners.

Regional Backing Sought

Trump credited leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Jordan, and Egypt for providing what he called “critical assistance” in shaping the proposed framework. According to White House insiders, the plan would go beyond immediate ceasefire arrangements and focus on a longer-term Middle East peace initiative.

“It’s called peace in the Middle East, more than Gaza. Gaza is a part of it, but it’s about regional stability,” Trump told reporters.

The plan reportedly envisions Arab states providing military and economic support in Gaza after Israel’s phased withdrawal. The Palestinian Authority may also be involved in governance. However, both the U.S. and Israel remain adamant that Hamas must be disarmed and excluded from any political role.

Domestic Storm in Washington

While the Trump Netanyahu Gaza peace plan dominates international headlines, Trump faces turbulence at home. More than 100,000 federal workers are expected to resign on Tuesday, marking the largest such event in U.S. history. The mass exits are part of Trump’s aggressive agenda to reduce the size of the federal government.

At the same time, Congress faces a looming deadline for funding. Without an agreement, the government risks a shutdown. Trump, in a surprising move, has invited bipartisan congressional leaders for a last-minute meeting at the White House to attempt a resolution.

Political observers say the overlapping crises — Gaza peace talks abroad and federal unrest at home — highlight Trump’s high-stakes gamble to assert control over both domestic and foreign policy narratives.

Netanyahu’s Calculated Gamble

For Netanyahu, the White House visit offers a crucial opportunity to reaffirm Israel’s most vital alliance. Israel is increasingly isolated diplomatically, with international courts, humanitarian agencies, and governments condemning its tactics in Gaza.

Despite this, Netanyahu is expected to receive a warm welcome from Trump, a stark contrast to the strained reception he received at the UNGA. Analysts suggest Netanyahu hopes to leverage Trump’s unwavering support to counterbalance pressure from Europe and the UN.

Critics Question Trump’s Motives

Not everyone is convinced of Trump’s sincerity in pursuing peace. Critics argue that the Trump Netanyahu Gaza peace plan is as much about political theater as it is about diplomacy. With U.S. elections on the horizon, Trump’s foreign policy moves could also serve as a bid to strengthen his credentials as a dealmaker.

Meanwhile, Palestinian leaders have voiced skepticism, pointing out that Gaza’s devastation and ongoing blockades cannot be addressed without halting Israeli military operations and guaranteeing Palestinian rights.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has insisted that Palestinian statehood is “a right, not a reward,” echoing concerns that Trump’s approach prioritizes political gains over humanitarian needs.

New York Fallout and International Backlash

During his UNGA address, Netanyahu doubled down on Israel’s position, insisting his government would never accept Hamas’s Survival and criticizing countries that recognized Palestine. The backlash was swift: multiple delegations staged walkouts, highlighting Israel’s deepening diplomatic isolation.

Al Jazeera’s diplomatic editor James Bays noted, “Israel has one supporter in the UN Security Council — the United States. The one man who can change things is Donald Trump.”

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

While leaders debate high-level frameworks, the humanitarian disaster in Gaza continues. The United Nations estimates tens of thousands have been killed, with many more injured and displaced. Hospitals face chronic shortages of medicine, water supplies remain contaminated, and aid convoys struggle to reach the most vulnerable communities.

Activists warn that without immediate relief, the situation could spiral further, undermining any long-term political solutions proposed in the Trump Netanyahu Gaza peace plan.

The Road Ahead

As Trump and Netanyahu prepare for their White House talks, questions loom large:

  • Will Netanyahu agree to concessions on Gaza withdrawal?
  • Can Trump bring Arab and Muslim nations into a sustainable framework?
  • And crucially, will Palestinian voices be included in shaping their own future?

What remains clear is that this meeting could set the tone for the next phase of Middle East diplomacy. Whether it leads to genuine progress or simply another round of stalled negotiations will depend on how much both leaders are willing to compromise.
